Wave management in SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) groups outbound delivery order items into manageable clusters for optimized batch picking, staging, and truck loading.
1. What is a Wave in SAP EWM?
Instead of processing single customer orders individually (which causes warehouse congestion and inefficient picker travel), wave management consolidates demand across multiple deliveries based on departure time, shipping route, carrier, or product category.
2. Configuring Wave Templates & Automatic Assignment
Wave templates are created via transaction /SCWM/WAVET. Key configuration parameters include:
- Wave Type: Classifies waves (e.g. Standard, Rush/Emergency, Batch Picking).
- Release Method: Automatic, Immediate upon creation, or Manual via Warehouse Management Monitor (
/SCWM/MON). - Cut-off Time & Duration: Specifies the maximum timestamp before wave processing begins.
3. Warehouse Order Creation Rules (WOCR) Linkage
When a wave is released, SAP EWM creates Warehouse Tasks (WTs). The system then evaluates Warehouse Order Creation Rules (WOCR) to package multiple tasks into a single Warehouse Order (WO) assigned to a picker's RF gun.
